Search engine listings are crucial to the success of your website. Plainly said, if people can't find you, you don't exist. Where is the first place that most people go to find what they are looking for? Search engines!

As I mentioned in my free website analysis, it seems as though the search engine game is getting more and more complicated. There are many factors to consider because all the major engines operate differently. Then there are those finicky Mega Directories like Yahoo and DMOZ which require your first born and a mortgage on your... Ok, maybe not that bad.

Basically, the secret to getting high ratings on the major search engines is in the way your site is designed to begin with. Pay-per-click Search Engines

Pay-per-click search engines are the easiest and fastest internet website marketing technique to get traffic to your site. However, there are only a handful of PPC search engines that are worth anything at all, so competition is usually high. The best of them is Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing. If you can bid to be in the top 3 positions you will be plastered all over the internet. And here is the best part of all -- almost instantly!

You need to determine the best search terms for your site, submit them for approval (usually 5 day turn around), put some money in your account and POOF, like magic you appear at the top of the page when someone performs a search with those keywords.

The most time consuming part is determining the best keywords to use. The most common keywords for your site are not usually the best ones to use for PPC search engines. Usually there is too much competition. Also, you must be very careful not to choose keywords that are extremely popular and bring lots of the wrong kind of traffic. Why? Because you pay for every click that comes to your site.

You want to pick keywords that will bring targeted traffic to your site. There are many keywords that at first glance may seem like a wise choice but turn out to be very expensive errors. For example, if you have a site that does promotions on the internet, you would not want to include the keyword "internet." Why? It's not specific enough and would end up costing you a fortune with very little results.

Pay-per-clicks can dramatically increase traffic to your site.

If you want to try any of these other PPC search engines, make sure you start small because I have not tried these and I don't think they have near the performance of Overture. When you buy into the top 3 positions on Overture you also appear on Yahoo, MSN, Netscape, America Online, Infospace, Lycos and many others. That is something you just can't buy anywhere else.

One of the best internet website marketing techniques to build traffic for your site is to grab people's attention by waving money in front of their noses. That is what an affiliate/associate program is all about. If you have any type of product or service on your site then you should really consider this option. The drawback is that you will have to share some of your profits. The advantage is that you won't have to share until you receive. That means you are only sharing your profits on a customer that you probably would not have had in the first place.

The best thing of all is that you can develop an army of people promoting your site and your product or service, and you don't have to pay them until they create results. Some sites that do this well have thousands of affiliates promoting them. The only down side is that the paperwork can get a little treacherous if you try to do it all yourself. In fact, if you don't have the proper software, you will have a hard time finding Affiliates that will join your program.

Link Exchange
Link exchange is one of the top 3 internet website marketing techniques. The key, as with pretty much anything else, is numbers. Having hundreds of links from other sites pointing into your site will create a major difference in your traffic count. Best of all, it is free.

Once you are up on someone else's site, you are there indefinitely. The only drawback to this method is time. It takes time to build hundreds of links pointing your way. You can read more free information on link exchange, including how to approach people and what to say by clicking here .

Webrings

Webrings can be fun and effective. They are free, other than the fact that you have to reciprocate with a listing for your webring on your site. I recommend creating a webring page on your site. That way, all the webrings don't show up on your first (or index) page.

Belonging to dozens of webrings can go a long way towards creating greater traffic, but you don't want all the webrings showing up on your first page. They can take away from the look of your site. Having a webring page is the perfect solution. Make sure that your webring page takes your visitors where you want them to go after they arrive. Again, this is a fairly easy marketing technique to implement, and well worth the effort.

Promote on chat, message boards and newsgroups

Some people may disagree with me but I don't find these types of marketing techniques very effective anymore. About the only thing I can see that works on these things are sex sites.

Warning: These methods are incredibly time consuming!!!!!

All the chat lines I've been on, no matter how serious the topic, are always talking about the same frivolous stuff. You have to be very careful with message boards and newsgroups because they are very touchy. They are constantly spammed, so even your signature with website address can set them off.

I'm sure there are a few people that are successful at promoting themselves with these internet website marketing techniques, but I think they are few and far between. The best way to promote yourself this way would be to have a third party sing your praises. If you know someone that's got many hours to surf the chats, message boards and newsgroups, and is willing to do it cheap, it might be worth your while to give it a try.

My bottom line is: If there are other methods that work better, then that's what I'll be doing.

Attract newsletter subscribers

Attracting newsletter subscribers is a great way to build traffic to your site. Newsletter subscribers are prime candidates for anything that has to do with your site. Of course the first method to attracting subscribers is by offering the letter on your site. To build a quicker list of opt-in subscribers you'll have to create a great opt-in offer and promote the heck out of it on your site.

Multiple entry points & website names

One of my websites is actually a composite of six websites. When I submit to search engines, I submit all my sites and the crawlers go through all of my pages on all my sites. Sometimes I pop up in places on search engines that I would never have imagined because of the way crawlers operate.

Marketers with larger budgets can buy up every single domain name they can think of that relates to their site. Then they forward them wherever they like. They can also take these different domains and point them to a free server where they redirect them anywhere they want. I'm sure you can use your imagination from here. The fact is that the more sites, the more pages, the more links you have, the better.

Do not create what are called "Mirrored" sites, as you will probably get yourself kicked off the search engines. Mirrored sites are considered to be a form of "spamming." The problem is that (as with anything else) a few bad apples on the internet ruin it for everyone else. Marketers looking for shortcuts take the exact same site and post it on different servers, under different site names to create several listings of their website on a search page result.

Your pages must be different and preferably offer unique content. Also, just buying up names, submitting them to the search engines and re-directing them to the exact same home page is a good way to get ignored or disqualified by the search engines.

Write, publish and submit articles

This is another great internet website marketing technique. Writing articles is a wonderful tool to create traffic to your site. No matter what you site is about you can write or find articles on that subject. There are two ways your site can benefit from articles.

The first way is for you to have articles available on your site. This makes your site more interesting and gives your visitors more reason to spend more time at your site and, most importantly, to return for new articles.

The second way is to submit your articles to related sites. Getting published on other sites is fairly easy. When your articles are published, they create two traffic-building vehicles. The first vehicle of course is the article itself. Normally when a site publishes your article they will include some personal information about you at the bottom of the article, which should include your website address of course.

The second vehicle is the fact that many of these sites you will be published on perform their own search engine submissions. This results in additional exposure on the major search engines.
